So What The Heck Is A Coulee Anyway?

Holy smokes. Wisconsin was not what I expected.  Like first off, unseasonably warm. Would you be surprised if I told you I came to Wisconsin and got sunburned?  And that's from a guy who lives in Florida.

I actually have one more day out here, so I'm not going to write a post about the trip yet, but I thought I'd share a few pictures of the Midwest Tenkara Fest and some of those Driftless streams...or Coulees...or whatever they're called...everything seems to be called _______ Coulee in this part of the world...

  1. Nice! What's the methodology out there... how do you fish those bendy, fast waters? Is there a strategy that seems to fit that kind of stream? Don't really have anything like that near where I live/fish...

    1. I'll be honest with you, it was a bit confusing to me too. I'm from the Northeast (like you), so it's all about pocket water and plunge pools, etc...for me as well.

I had problems the first day without a doubt. The water was generally low and clear, fish scattered like crazy. Fishing in the middle of pastures was just foreign. I fished with a friend the past day and a half and he pointed out that the stream carves out deep holes downstream of those sharp bends. Concentrating on those, undercuts in the banks, and targeting rising fish helped crack some of the code..
