The Instagram Fiasco of December 18, 2012

This is not necessarily a fishing post, rather it’s somewhat of a social media post, as I tend to do here from time to time.  See in addition to being fisherfolk, most of my readers also partake in some form of social media, be it through bloggingFacebook, Twitter, whatever…

There was an interesting revelation regarding the updated terms of service of a popular photo sharing app/social network (that also happens to be owned by THE omnipresent social network) yesterday.  For those of you who weren’t following along, here’s a summary of the general reaction that took place in Instagramland…

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGHolycrapTermsofserviceWTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#boycott#boycott#boycott#boycottOMGOMGThey’regonnasellthepictureItookofmy3leggeddogtosomecompanytosellcameratripodsOMGOMGOMGelfontheshelfWTF!!!!#freeowljonesOMGOMGOMGI’msoouttahereI’mgonnatakemykelvinfilteredphotostoFlickrYEAHTHAT’LLGETEM@instagramyousuckBITEMEI’msooveryou………Oh…wait…they’re reconsidering.  Maybe I should too.  #sorry???

First off…Flickr…really?
Second, and more importantly…  Your pictures aren’t that good and your kids aren’t as cute as mine, so chill out.  Even after you cross processed your mini masterpieces (the photos, not the kids) with both X-Pro II and Hefe filters.  Don’t worry, Kimberly-Clark ain’t buying them for a national ad campaign…although honestly, if they did, you should be honored.
When it comes to any form of social media, or internet stuff in general, if you don’t want people to see it, don’t write or post it.  Remember, every time someone searches cure for genital warts on Google, a person in Mountain View, California starts laughing…hysterically…
Third, and finally…it’s all Cameron’s fault.  He’s the one who got the fishing scene into Instagram in the first place…I blame him for this mess.
See you on Pinterest…that’s where all the chicks are anyway…

  1. I hear they are “re-wording” their terms, but the bottom line is still the same- if you want something to remain “yours” in the online world don't post it to the internet anywhere.I never jumped on that bandwagon, but I believe you are right in blaming Cameron. Something tells me he's collecting dividend checks.

  2. This may rank up there with any of your top 10 posts over the last two years. 🙂 LOL #FREEOWLJONES indeed! LOL Where all the chicks are anyway..bwahahhaaha. Thanks for the laugh today! So glad I stopped by! Of course, I stop by most days… 🙂

  3. Great post, Mike. Very funny! Spending a few seconds thinking about Instagram the lest few days, three things have become clear.1. If I were a pro, rights to my photos would be a great concern to me.2. If I were a pro, I wouldn't be posting my photos on instagram.3. I am not a pro.

  4. Right on, Mike. It's called “social” media for a reason. The lemming response in Instagram (people deleting accounts, moaning like their first born was taken) is somewhat comical. Pinterest, really?

  5. I think it's hilarious, “OMG this free service that had to be built using millions of lines of code, and has to be maintained and defended from hackers daily, YOU MEAN THEY CAN USE MY STUFF?”I use the dread evil known as flickr (Flickr Pro for $30/year), if only because I started there 5 years ago and now my account has like 300,000 photos in it. I blog from several different PC's so I need an online repository (and I'm too lazy to buy cloud space). But I link my blog photos back to Flickr and Flickr's use of my photos on google search is one reason why my blog now gets 20,000 visitors per month. That and my truly amazing content. Obviously.Want better terms? Use a paid service. Problem solved.

  6. Sometimes it pays to be old and not having to worry about Instragram, Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, or any of the gazillion other social media places out there because we're (with the exception of Mel and Howard) not smart enough to be on those sites. Old = Good.

  7. Yeah, Pinterest…ummm…I should probably address that. In context of this post, it was totally a joke. That said, once upon a time I thought I'd give it a try. You know, might make more people StumbleUpon and Digg my posts, obviously increasing my Klout score in the process. Well, that hasn't worked, and I've pretty much given up on it, just like Google+ and most message boards.

  8. I'm not bothered in the slightest if images I post to the internet are used elsewhere, they cost me nothing and I'm not looking to make my fortune blogging or through social media, it's just a bit of fun and sharing my hobbies with like minded people. Would I be bothered to find out that one of my images was used in a marketing campaign to make a private enterprise millions of £££, not really no, but it would be nice if instagram and the like offered to share a little of that money ;-)What I'm more bothered about is facebook autoplaying video advertisements on my timeline, a proposal for 2013. This is a bit invasive and will surely turn more people away from FB, I've quite FB a few times but always get moaned back onto it because I start missing social events and the like, it's the only way my friends seem to communicate these days. All of the free services online are great, imagine they were all subscription based, which would you still be using ?, I'd put all my eggs in the google basket if that were the case, and maybe twitter too.
