L.L. Bean Will Make Me Misbehave

I told myself this year would be different.  I told myself there are better ways to spend my money.  I told myself there was no reason to get another rod this year, let alone another 3-weight.  Now I'm thinking (much like Lilly at dinner time) that I'm not going to be a very good listener.

I got my copy of the L.L. Bean Fly Fishing catalog last night and am absolutely smitten with the new Pocket Water fly rod.  See, I'm a sucker for a pretty face, and this rod is a looker (magazine centerfolds usually are, right?)

You'll immediately notice that it's got a paint job that looks somewhat like bamboo.  Appears to be very similar to the finish on my Sakura Betuatsurae Kongo tenkara rod, a rod that looks good in pictures but is stunning up close.

Additionally, from what I understand, the rod has some steak to go with that sizzle as well.  It got some relatively good press following last year's IFTD show, and I really look forward to getting out to a store to at least see, fondle, and hopefully cast one in person.

Here's a video...if you like those sort of things...and yes, it's sub $200.

The more I think about it, maybe I'll go up a size and get a 4-weight instead of the 3-weight.  I'm certain that will absolutely justify the purchase, right?  Thought so.  Let's not mention the fact that then I'll also need the matching 4-weight click & pawl reel to go with it.  Nah, that'll be our dirty little secret.

  1. Get it while the gettings good. The only justification you need is that the rod exists. And, I won't say anything about the reel.

You got me thinking, like you do I need another combo????? This rod looks and sound from the video really really lightweight, which I go for. I certainly can't mention this to my wife.

  3. I saw this as well, and have $100 in gift certificates to LLB burning a hole in my pocket.

Strictly DADT.....as I'm sure the wife's next purse will be, as well.

  4. What caught my eye was the canoe on page 8. I'm having a hard time convincing my wife that I need a $7500 canoe. Oh, and the additional $300 shipping. I told her I'd settle for the 100th anniversary bamboo rod on page 6, but she didn't go for that either. But "It's free shipping", I said.

  5. Mike never needs permission from me to buy a 4-wt, or anything else for that matter. Just like I don't need his permission to buy a new sewing machine...or 100 yards of fabric...or a new mannequin...

  6. Bean is good stuff. That's the only reason I would need. Come to think of it. I need a 4 wt. It's pretty much the only thing missing from my arsenal.

  7. Meh.

Save $120 and buy the 6'6" Quest 2 3wt for $70. Then, cast it as it should be marked, with a 4wt line.

  8. That is ok, I'm not a very good listener either, my wife can attest to that.

  10. I thought the very same thing when I received the catalog in the mail, the week after Christmas...
Now, since they've downsized the fishing department in a major way at our local retail store, I'm not sure they will ever get it in stock.
I might just have to order one to replace the Quest that I'm totally unsatisfied with (although I love the 5 and 7 weight Streamlights that I have).
